Southern Utah to Northern Arizona
We left Zion National Park on the morning of Sunday 4 December, heading for Grand Canyon National Park. It's a little over 250 miles around the canyon, and we added a few more exploring a bit in Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument. Just outside of Kanab, UT we took about a 13-mile off-road detour to see the site of the Paria Movie Set and the old town of Pahreah. Several of the mid-60's era westerns, including El Dorado, were filmed here. The sets are all gone now, and all that remains is the cemetery of the old town. We also stopped at the visitor center for the Glen Canyon Dam, mostly so that we could walk across the steel-arch bridge. After a quick stop to check out Horseshoe Bend, we finally got to Grand Canyon a little after dar. The road in from the east entrance was dark and icy, but we saw a mountain lion and one of the best sunsets we'd seen in years.
